History of the Aroostook Valley Sail and Power Squadron

It was just six years ago that Bill Bergen of Presque Isle had the idea that there should be a Power Squadron in the area to serve the Community of Aroostook County. So he and his nine mates, Imbesat Daudi, John Langley, Johan Langley, Joseph Mack, Alden Rathbun, Pat Rathbun, Bill Smythe, Alan Harding, and Mary Bergen organized the County's first local USPS (United States Power Squadron) and named it “The Aroostook Valley Provisional Power Squadron.”

Just three years later, with 31 members, we were officially chartered by the USPS and named “The Aroostook Valley Sail and Power Squadron”. Our chartering ceremony was on 31 Jan 2004.

The Squadron has a very busy agenda this coming year educating its members as well as the general public. Members will be taking courses in Advanced Sail, Piloting, Vessel Safety Check, Advanced Boating, GPS, and Advanced Piloting in addition to welcoming informational speakers at the monthly meetings.

The squadron is made up of members who boat, canoe, and sail in both inland and coastal waters.
